Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, sold 20 million shares of Apple (AAPL) in Q2 2024. This reduced its stake by 6.67% compared to Q1. The value of its Apple holdings dropped by $4.1 billion, bringing its portfolio share down from 25.76% to 22.31%.

Despite the reduction, Apple remains Berkshire’s largest holding, with approximately 280 million shares at the end of Q2. This marks the first time in six months that Berkshire has trimmed its Apple position.

Berkshire also reduced its position in Bank of America (BAC), selling 26.31 million shares in Q2. Over the past year, the firm has cut its BAC holdings by more than 40%, from 1.03 billion shares in mid-2023 to 605 million shares by Q2 2024.

Despite the reduction, Bank of America remains Berkshire’s third-largest holding, with a portfolio share rising slightly from 10.19% to 11.12%.

New Positions: UnitedHealth and Nucor Steel

Berkshire made significant new investments in Q2, including:

  • UnitedHealth (UNH): Bought 5.04 million shares, worth $1.57 billion at quarter-end.
  • Nucor Steel (NUE): Acquired 6.61 million shares, valued at $857 million.
  • Lennar (LEN) and Lamar Advertising (LAMR): Added smaller positions in these stocks.

UnitedHealth’s stock surged over 9% in after-hours trading following the disclosure. Analysts speculate that these new investments may have been made by Buffett’s investment deputies, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, rather than Buffett himself.

Chevron: The Only Top Holding to See an Increase

Among Berkshire’s top 10 holdings, Chevron (CVX) was the only stock that saw an increase in Q2. Berkshire added 3.45 million shares, raising its stake by $495 million. However, due to Chevron’s declining stock price, its portfolio share fell from 7.69% to 6.79%.

Other Portfolio Changes

  • Exited T-Mobile (TMUS): Sold all 3.88 million shares, removing it from the portfolio.
  • Top 10 Holdings Unchanged: The list of Berkshire’s largest holdings remained the same as in Q1, with only minor ranking adjustments.
